'All about ability' - How the Paralympic Movement is maintainingmomentum
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has launched a videocalled "All about ability" to mark the United Nations International Dayof Persons with Disabilities. This year's day is themed "BreakBarriers, Open Doors: for an inclusive society and development forall". The day provides an opportunity to further raise awareness aboutaccessibility with the ultimate goal or removing barriers and enablingequal participation for all persons with an impairment. The IPC's videocelebrates the contributions made by para-athletes as agents of changeand development in the communities in which they live. It expresses theIPC's aspiration that the performances and incredible stories ofathletes teach the values of acceptance and appreciation for peoplewith an impairment, contributing to the development of a more equitablesociety with respect and equal opportunities for all individuals. Innaming the film "All about ability", the IPC focuses on the abilitiesof athletes rather than their disabilities. "Your performances willinspire and excite the world," IPC President Sir Philip Craven says inthe film. "You will not just inspire a generation, but many generationsto come." The film looks back on the history of the Paralympic Movementand celebrates the milestones achieved so far in terms of athleteparticipation, development of sporting events, increased commercialsupport and media coverage. It ends with the call to actionthat "Together we are spreading a message of respect and equalopportunity for all individuals." he International Paralympic Committee(IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement. Itspurpose is to organise the summer and winter Paralympic Games and actas the International Federation for nine sports, supervising andcoordinating World Championships and other competitions. The vision ofthe IPC, run by 200 members, is 'To enable Paralympic athletes toachieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the world.'
